Biography
Johannes M.A. (Hans) Daniels, MD, PhD is an academic physician whose work lies at the intersection of interventional pulmonology, thoracic oncology, diagnostic innovation, and medical education. He qualified as a pulmonologist in 2009 and earned his PhD at the University of Amsterdam in 2010. He is currently a thoracic oncologist and Director of Bronchoscopy and Interventional Pulmonology at Amsterdam UMC, a tertiary referral center with recognized expertise in lung cancer and complex respiratory disease.
Over more than fifteen years, his clinical practice has covered the full spectrum of interventional pulmonology, including advanced bronchoscopic techniques such as EBUS, navigation bronchoscopy, cryotherapy and cryobiopsy, airway stenting, laser and diathermy, and medical thoracoscopy. He has particular expertise in the bronchoscopic management of complex central airway disorders, including bronchial carcinoid, tracheobronchial amyloidosis, tracheal stenosis, and malignant airway obstruction. Throughout his career, clinical care, technological development, and research have remained closely integrated.
His academic interests increasingly focus on diagnostic reasoning and the interpretation of complex information in modern medicine. Beyond technical performance, his research addresses the conceptual and educational challenges of emerging diagnostic and imaging technologies. He is involved in multiple research projects and co-supervises PhD candidates in interventional pulmonology, lung cancer, and rare pulmonary diseases.
Education is a central pillar of his work. As Course Director at the School of Respirology, he leads postgraduate education in interventional pulmonology and airway management, emphasizing clinical judgment under uncertainty and the responsible integration of new technologies into practice. He is actively engaged in professional societies, guideline development, and consensus building at national and international levels.
